WORK IN PROGRESS & ON WITH THE SHOW
Curated by ALI BACON with MIRANDA PENDER and EILEEN CAMERON
Morning in the Murch Room / Afternoon in the Duncan Room
The date 25th July is notional thanks to the redesign of our calendar made necessary by the lockdown. Whenever it takes place, the “July” Day will be our reunion meetup, a celebration of subscribers’ Work in Progress followed by a rivetting and entertaining afternoon provisionally titled by Ali Bacon as “On with the Show.”
As with all our redesigned Days, the named curators will design and curate their Days, even if, in the event, they have to ask other curators to compere on the actual Day.
Please read Ali’s notes below before you get in touch and contact her soon to ensure your place in the Murch. She is also looking to hear from subscribers who want to contribute to the “On with the Show” afternoon in the Duncan Room. Seating limit is no constraint in the Duncan Room.
WORK IN PROGRESS JULY 25th
Murch Room 10am -12.30
(Followed by a reunion lunch in the Duncan room at 1.30–subject to conformation of room booking times from BRSLI)
You will be asked to submit in advance something on which you would like to garner opinions. e.g.
- Extract of work in progress
- Outline or synopsis of above
- An actual plan of action for any project (writing, reading/curating, getting published or organising a performance)
Attendees should have read other contributions in advance and be ready to comment on the day. 10 participants over 2 hours (30 mins for breaks and socialising) allows 10 – 12 mins each for feedback which should be general rather than a line by line analysis. I suggest four sides of A4 text in a clearly legible type face and size is the most you should submit + images if appropriate.
There will be a deadline for submissions of at least ten days before the event (so July 15th at this point) and reminders of this will be sent in advance. Remember to allow reading time in your schedule during in the days between submitting and the event. If you book a place and don’t submit in advance you may contribute verbally but 10 mins including discussion will be the maximum you can have.
I hope this is clear and my strictures haven’t put you off! The point of the exercise is to share what we have been up to and what we are planning. I’m looking forward to hearing back from you very soon.
PLEASE CONTACT ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE PART AND I WILL ADD YOUR NAME BELOW
(Maximum 10 attendees)

ON WITH THE SHOW! JULY 25TH
Duncan Room 2 pm – 4.30
(preceded by Reunion Lunch, subject to BRSLI booking confirmation)
As a group, performing and showcasing is our strength. This is a chance to get up and celebrate our reunion in the best way we can with that reading, performance or visual presentation we’ve been saving just for now. Something new or new to us, preferably of a light-hearted or celebratory nature – perhaps the piece you were planning for the original ‘comedy’ afternoon?
Timing is difficult as we don’t know when this will happen and if any of us may still be in lock-down, but I’m assuming a big take-up. I’m suggesting 5 – 7 minutes as a guide (please do a test run!) but will accept sets up to 10 minutes if they are of a kind that can be scaled down if necessary. Joint presentations are possible with appropriate scaling up of times.
Contributions will be requested in advance from May onwards with a deadline of June 30th. I anticipate this will be members only and a chance, I hope, for everyone to take part who would like to.
As soon as you have decided what you would like to do, please email me the following details:
title of the set
nature of the set (genre/format etc),
anyone else involved
outline of any visuals to be included
running time (and if this could be shorter if required)
Thanks you for your attention. I think this will be a truly joyful celebration whenever it happens.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ALREADY INTEND TO TAKE PART IN THE AFTERNOON SESSION AND I WILL ADD YOUR NAME BELOW.
Further calls will be issued in due course
